Aims - to enable learners to think ‘like a geographer’.
That is to say, learners will develop the skills necessary to conduct framed enquiries in the classroom and in the field in order to develop their understanding of specialised geographical concepts and current geographical issues.

Exam Paper 3 – Synoptic Issue Based Paper

  • This will be based on a geographical issue within a place-based context that links to the three synoptic themes (listed below) and is rooted in two or more of the compulsory content areas.
  • Students will be given a resource booklet with information about the geographical issue.

Synoptic Themes:

  1. Players
  2. Attitudes and actions
  3. Futures and uncertainties.

Total marks – 70

Exam Length – 2 hours and 15 minutes

Value - 20% of the overall grade

Exam Questions - 8, 18 and 24 mark extended writing questions

Non-Examination Assessment (NEA) – Independent Investigation

  • Students select a topic of interest to them, define a question on this topic, collect primary and secondary data to answer the question through presenting the data, analysis it and drawing conclusions before evaluating the techniques and investigation.

Total marks – 70

Value - 20% of the overall grade

  • There are 4 days of compulsory fieldwork.  In a typical year three of these days will be a residential based at YH Conwy for two nights during year 12.
