Pastoral Care

We believe that the academic and pastoral life of a school cannot be separated. In order for our students to achieve high standards and attain good grades, they need a calm and pleasant atmosphere where they can enjoy themselves in a safe and disciplined environment.

We hope that Netherthorpe will be like a second home for all our students. Belonging to Netherthorpe is like belonging to a well-established family. We expect everyone to strive for high standards in their work and in their play. We expect behaviour that shows tolerance and respect for others. We expect everyone to make a positive contribution to the whole school community.

As in most families, there is an emphasis on the need for order and civilised behaviour. This is achieved with a disciplinary process which clearly shows students the consequences of their actions; pastoral staff who have a detailed knowledge of the students in their care; and a close working relationship with the vast majority of our parents.

As in most families, too, we reward achievement and good behaviour. The School has a stepped system of rewards and privileges which ranges from verbal praise, receiving postcards of praise or certificates, completing rewards cards to be entered into prize draws in award assemblies. An important way in which we reward students is to encourage them to accept posts of responsibility and we have structures in place from Y7 –Y13 to encourage as many students as possible to do so.

We are delighted when we can reward and give ownership to the students and we are not afraid to punish to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning.

Our mission, therefore, is to develop in each student a sense of worth, self-esteem and self-respect, balanced by a sense of duty and service to others.
